Print advert for the smile campaign, evaluation, feedback reflection and skills development
My smile project did not turn out as originally expected. This is due to things that i don't want to explain but however, i was still able to come up with a print advert for this campaign. The print advert consists of a low key lighting portrait photo that is edited to add more of a dark feel, a smiley face sticker, mind logo etc and a quote saying "fake it until you make it". This turned out better than i expected for such a short period of time turnaround but still isn't amazing.
What i could of done better would of been if i had more time, would of been to plan out the lighting more as it didn't fully go to plan. Next time i will take time to fully plan out the project.
At the start of the project, i researched into the client and their needs. Then after, i researched into the target audience for this product. I achieved this by both primary and secondary research, by googling about the client/company and also conducting a survey on different thing that link together such as what is your age to what you do to help your mental health. This is so it would then give me an idea of what the audience would like so therefore making my product even better. After that, i then done market research on similar products and annotated what i liked/disliked and what i learnt from the products in the sense of what works well and makes a product of that subject excel. For the rest of the post production phase i filled out paperwork such as a risk assessment, contributor/location release form and equipment/personnel list. This is so it shows the professional practice side of things that would be used in the media working world because more than likely, paperwork like that would take place. Another thing i done for pre production was create a flat plan,
After this, i then began actually shooting photos, this took place in the Sunderland College studio. I took multiple photos with different but similar lighting this is i could then see which one was the best one in general and the best one to edit. After this, i then began the post production phase. What i first done was go on to Photoshop and import the image. After, i then began editing. What i first done was click on the layer option at the top, then on adjustment layer, then on brightness/contrast. Afterwards i then moved the brightness slider to -67 and -5 for the contrast. I then used adjustment layer again but with colour lookup this time to give it a blue tone. After i then added on the stickers: the smiley face, mind logo and every mind matters. I dragged and placed the smiley face (that i imported from google images) over the top of the persons face to give the symbolic meaning of a fake smile. But unfortunately, it was not transparent so i had to use the magic eraser tool on Photoshop around the end of the photo so the white part of the sticker/image is erased so it looks like a sticker and it is just the smiley face.
Fortunately, for the the other two stickers (the mind logo and every mind matters sticker), i did not need to do that extra step that was needed for the smiley face, as they were there to contrast the a darker part of the image. I placed them both in each bottom corner, this is so it doesn't draw attention to the logos as they are not a key part of the print ad as these style of ads are more centered around the viewer then the company.
I am not 100% pleased with the end product as i felt as if i had to rush it but it is still decent. The main thing that i like about the product is the use of colours. I used colours to set the scene of the advert, such as it being mainly just darker blue and light yellow. The use of these two specific colours are to show for darker blue: sadness etc and for the bright yellow: joy, happiness etc and also how they contrast.
What i have improved on from my induction project to this project has been technical skills and research skills. For technical skills, this has been mainly in the area of photo editing. This is because this project in compared to the induction one is more focused around editing the photo rather than adding on text etc and in the induction, i didn't use stuff like brightness layers, colour select etc.
